Topic: The Future of the Internet from the Bottom Up

I’ll talk about how the issues of neutrality, privacy, and transparency have helped to define new types of activism and advocacy directed at changing how the internet is designed and governed.  This recursive activism is not just ON the network but OF the network. It creates new sites of negotiation and involves new stakeholders in what used to be called “internet governance.”  I’ll give some cross-national examples of how community Wi-Fi projects, open government initiatives, net neutrality advocacy and privacy advocacy are part of this transformation - and what their differences can tell us about the future(s) of the internet.
